What a Later Owner Does Not Prove

A manuscript's creation and a manuscript's custody are not the same fact, and the Nestorian Evangelion's later history makes the distinction worth stating plainly. The book itself is a sixteenth century Church of the East Gospel book, produced within that communion's own scribal and artistic practice. Its documented nineteenth century history runs through a different, later communion: Addai Scher, the archbishop who donated the manuscript to the Bibliotheque nationale de France in 1909, held office as a Chaldean Catholic archbishop, a communion formed out of a divide within the Church of the East that solidified over the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, after this Gospel book was already painted. A donor's own affiliation three centuries after a work was made says nothing about who made it or for which community it was first produced.

Held today at the Bibliotheque nationale de France under shelfmark MS syr. 344, measuring 31.2 by 19.8 centimeters, the manuscript stands as a rare surviving example of narrative Christian illustration from within the Church of the East tradition specifically, a body whose historical caution around religious imagery has left relatively few illustrated manuscripts for comparison. Its eighteen scenes are accordingly read less as one artist's isolated choice and more as evidence that pictorial narration had a real, if limited, place inside Church of the East devotional life.
