Religious dress records clothing, vestments or ritual garments a tradition sets apart for worship, ceremony or an ordained or initiated role, distinct from ordinary religious modesty practices in being a specific, often codified garment rather than a general standard of dress. A bishop's chasuble, a Buddhist monk's robe, a Sikh turban, a Jewish tallit: each carries a specific form a tradition has settled on, frequently across many centuries, rather than a loosely followed convention any wearer could vary freely.
An entry records what a garment is made of and how it is constructed where that is documented, who wears it and under what circumstances, ordinarily or only in a specific rite, and whatever symbolic meaning a tradition attaches to its particular form, a color, a shape, a number of folds or layers, since a religious garment's construction is very often as deliberate and as meaningful as any other element of a ritual it belongs to.
Where a garment's public wearing has become legally or politically contested in a modern context, the entry records that contest as a documented fact about the garment's present standing, described from published scholarship and reporting rather than argued from any side, since the atlas describes a practice rather than instructing in it or adjudicating a dispute over it.
