What the Book Keeps and What It Changes

The Transitional Book of Doctrines and Discipline is less a break with Methodist tradition than a deliberate act of selective continuity. Its doctrinal core, the historic Articles of Religion, the Confession of Faith and the General Rules that trace back through Methodism's own founding centuries, carries over largely unchanged, because the Global Methodist Church presents itself as the branch that kept the denomination's older theological standards rather than one that invented new ones. Readers familiar with the United Methodist Church's own Book of Discipline will recognize most of the doctrinal chapters immediately.

Where the two texts diverge sharply is in church order rather than doctrine proper: the Global Methodist Church's book restricts ordained ministry and marriage rites to heterosexual, monogamous relationships, closing off the ordination and marriage practices that had become optional or locally decided in parts of the United Methodist Church. It also reorganizes some administrative structures, including how bishops are selected and how long they serve, moving away from the lifetime episcopacy common in the body it left. The result is a text that argues, in its own structure, that the dispute driving the split was never mainly about doctrine at all, but about how a shared doctrine gets applied to ordination and marriage in practice.
