Two Worlds, One Person

Mandaean cosmology is dualist, but the dualism is not only a fact about the universe at large. It runs directly through each person. The soul, in this teaching, belongs to the World of Light and finds itself a stranger in the body it inhabits, while the body itself belongs to the World of Darkness and to the powers that govern it, among them the seven planets and the twelve signs of the zodiac, figures Mandaean texts treat as hostile rather than neutral. The material world as a whole is described as a mixture, assembled by lower beings rather than by the Great Life itself, and a Mandaean life is organized around keeping the soul's connection to its true origin open rather than around trying to escape the mixed world outright. This is a meaningfully different shape of dualism from the stark good body, evil body picture sometimes assumed of Gnostic religions generally. The body is not simply condemned; it is the site the soul has to work through while its bond to the World of Light is tended and kept alive across an ordinary human lifetime, in a religion that expects to be lived out here rather than fled from immediately. Mandaean texts describe the soul as carrying within it a portion of the Great Life's own light, and it is that inherited spark which makes the return journey possible at all rather than leaving the soul simply stranded far from its origin with no way back.
