Wu Qu, the Military Treasurer

Wu Qu, martial song, joins two associations that might seem at odds, military discipline and financial stewardship, into a single star, and the tradition's reading follows both threads at once: resolve, directness and a capacity for hard, sustained effort on one side, and wealth accumulated through that same effort rather than through inheritance or chance on the other.

The pairing reflects a genuinely old link in Chinese administrative history between military office and treasury management, since a standing army's upkeep was, in imperial China as in most premodern states, one of the largest and most carefully audited expenses a government carried, so a single star governing both discipline and the ledgers that discipline required is less an odd combination than a fairly direct reflection of how those two domains actually sat together in practice.

Wu Qu's people are read in the tradition as plain spoken and practical, more comfortable with a task clearly defined and directly pursued than with the ambiguity and behind the scenes manoeuvring Tian Ji's own reading favours, a contrast between two stars that share membership in the same six star series while pulling toward genuinely different temperaments.
