The Fastest Selling Game Built on a Classic Novel
This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.
Black Myth: Wukong did not merely sell well when it released on August 20, 2024; it sold at a pace with few precedents for a game built on centuries old religious and literary material. Ten million copies moved in its first four days, eighteen million within two weeks and twenty million within its first month, at times drawing more than 2.4 million concurrent players on Steam alone. Guinness World Records credited it as the fastest selling video game ever based on a classic novel, and it was the most downloaded PlayStation 5 title in North America, Europe and Japan during the month it launched. Critical reception matched the commercial reception closely, with a Metacritic score of 81 on PC and 76 on PlayStation 5.
The game's success is part of a much older pattern rather than an isolated event. Sun Wukong's story has been retold in Chinese popular culture continuously since Journey to the West itself was written, and temples dedicated to him still stand and receive worship in parts of China and Southeast Asia today. Black Myth: Wukong is best understood as the newest and, commercially, by far the largest entry in that long retelling tradition, carrying a shared religious cosmology built from Buddhist, Daoist and folk elements into a medium the story had not reached at this scale before.
