The Reverse of the Christian Story

Mandaeans hold Yahya Yuhana, the figure Christians know as John the Baptist, as their own teacher and as the model of the priestly life their tradition asks its clergy to follow, and an entire book of Mandaean scripture is devoted to him. Their account of Jesus follows directly from this and runs exactly opposite to the Christian one. In Mandaean texts, Jesus receives baptism from Yahya and afterward turns away from his teacher's instruction, so where Christian tradition reads Jesus as fulfilling John's preparatory role, Mandaean tradition reads him as a falsifier who took what he was given and departed from it. This is not a minor variance in emphasis. It is a full reversal of who is teacher and who is the deviation, built on the same two figures and much of the same first century setting that Christian sources use, but assigning the authority to the opposite side of the encounter. A reader coming to Mandaeism from a Christian background should expect the entire relationship between the two figures to run backward from what is familiar, not merely to be retold with different details. The two traditions share a striking amount of common ground before the accounts diverge, including baptism itself as the central rite each considers essential to a right relationship with the divine, which makes the reversal at the point of divergence stand out all the more sharply against everything the two traditions still hold in common.
