Orungan's Pursuit and the Birth of the Orisha From a Mother's Body

The best known single episode in Yemoja's narrative tradition is also its most violent: her son by Aganju, Orungan, is said to have pursued her with an intention the tradition states plainly rather than obscuring, and as he reached for her a second time, having already forced himself on her once before, Yemoja fell backward to the ground. What follows is described in the fullest versions with striking physical specificity: her body began to swell, two streams of water broke from her, and her abdomen burst open, and from that single catastrophic moment a substantial number of orisha are said to have been born directly, including, in some tellings, Shango and Ogun among others. Yoruba narrative tradition does not soften this story into a gentler origin myth; the violence done to Yemoja is presented as the direct and stated cause of the orisha's birth, not as an unfortunate detail attached to an otherwise triumphant creation account. The same tradition holds that the waters which broke from her at that moment became the rivers, and eventually, in later diaspora retellings, the sea itself, so that Yemoja's later identity across the Atlantic as a goddess of the ocean is narrated as a continuation of this specific, violent origin rather than as an unrelated later development. E. Bolaji Idowu's survey of Yoruba religious concepts reads the myth's refusal to soften its own violence as consistent with a broader pattern in the tradition, in which an orisha's later authority is repeatedly narrated as inseparable from, rather than despite, what the myths say was done to them.
