Corpus Christi itself was abolished as an English feast day in 1548, cutting the plays loose from the liturgical calendar that had anchored them, and the cycle's own content became a target: scenes honoring the Virgin Mary were stripped out to accommodate the new religious orthodoxy before the whole cycle was suppressed outright in 1569. For more than three centuries afterward the plays existed only on the page, in the Register manuscript now held at the British Library and dated to roughly 1463 to 1477. A modest fundraising revival staged six of the pageants in 1909, but the decisive moment came in 1951, when a large scale production at St Mary's Abbey drew an audience estimated at 26,000, proving the cycle could still fill a city's streets four centuries after it had last legally done so. Regular performances resumed from 1975 onward, with major productions in 2000, 2012, 2016, 2019 and 2021, each restaging some portion of the medieval cycle using the surviving Register text as its base, and the York Mystery Plays are now as much a fixture of the modern city's civic calendar as they once were of its religious one, staged by community volunteers rather than trade guilds but tracing a direct line back to 1376.Cross-Tradition ConnectionsArticle OnYork Mystery Plays, Performance Works Well-attested SourcesYork Mystery Plays (Wikipedia)tier 3Wikipedia contributors, Wikipedia, 2026View the SourceComments (0)No comments yet.
