The Zion Christian Church is the largest African Initiated Church in Southern Africa, founded by Engenas Barnabas Lekganyane in 1924 after he separated from an earlier Zionist congregation and established his own headquarters at Thabakgone, near Polokwane in what is now South Africa's Limpopo Province, on a site that grew into the city known today as Moria. From an initial base of roughly twenty congregations in the northern Transvaal, the Witwatersrand and neighboring Rhodesia, the church grew under Lekganyane and his successors into a denomination with well over a million members, by most counts the single largest Christian denomination indigenous to Southern Africa.
The church belongs to the Zionist stream of African Christianity, tracing its name and early theology to the Christian Catholic Apostolic Church founded in Zion, Illinois, whose missionaries reached South Africa in the early twentieth century, though the tradition that grew from that contact developed a distinctly Southern African theology within a generation. Worship blends healing centered, Pentecostal influenced practice with Southern African cultural forms, distinctive brass band music and ordered dance, and a biblical Israelite self understanding that reads the church's own history through Old Testament narrative.
