Authenticity and Scholarship

For the tradition, Zulfiqar is the historical sword of Ali, a gift of the Prophet and a token of divine favour in battle. Scholarship does not dispute that a memory of such a sword is old, it appears in the earliest layers of the biographical and hadith literature, but it distinguishes that memory from any surviving object and from the later iconography. There is no artefact that can be shown to be the sword, and the celebrated bifurcated form is not described in the earliest sources; most historians treat the forked blade as a symbolic image that developed over time rather than a report of the weapon's actual shape. Even the meaning of the name is discussed, "notched" being the usual explanation.

This is why the object is classified as legendary in existence and debated in authenticity: not to diminish its immense religious and cultural reality, especially in Shia Islam, but to state accurately that the physical sword is not attested and its familiar shape is a tradition. The honest account holds the two together, a sword central to Islamic memory and devotion, and a physical object that history cannot recover.
