The Order of Interbeing is an international Buddhist community of monks, nuns and laypeople within the Plum Village Tradition, established by the Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh between 1964 and 1966. It began with six board members of the School for Youth and Social Services, three men and three women, who received ordination in February 1966 and committed to studying and practicing the Fourteen Precepts of Engaged Buddhism; a seventh member joined by 1981, and by 2020 the order had grown to more than one thousand core members. Its name draws on Vietnamese terms meaning being in touch with, continuing, realizing and making it here and now, reflecting Nhat Hanh's coinage of the term Interbeing to express Buddhist ideas of non-self, dependent origination and emptiness; the community includes both monastics and laypeople guided by the Fourteen Mindfulness Trainings.
