The Bartholomites were a Roman Catholic congregation of Armenian monks who sought refuge in Italy after the 1296 invasion of their homeland by Al-Adil Kitbugha, the Sultan of Egypt. The first group of refugee monks landed at Genoa, where they established their initial church of St. Bartholomew, from which the congregation took its name. The order subsequently expanded to numerous Italian cities, including Parma, Siena, Pisa, Florence, Rome, Milan, Naples and Bologna.
