Brothers of the Cross of Jesus

The Brothers of the Cross of Jesus were a French order of Roman Catholic monks founded in 1820 at Lyon, France, by Father C.M. Bochard, a Doctor of the Sorbonne and Vicar-General of the Diocese of Lyon, who served as its first superior general from 1820 to 1834. The order grew during the 19th century across eastern France and Switzerland, until the anticlerical persecution of 1903 destroyed nearly all of its establishments. In 1905, Brother Evariste led 32 members to establish a province in Canada under the patronage of Andre-Albert Blais, Bishop of Rimouski.
