The Little Sisters of the Poor is a Catholic religious institute for women dedicated to serving elderly people in need, founded by Saint Jeanne Jugan in 1839 after she encountered the many impoverished elderly who lined the streets of French towns and cities. The congregation began in Cancale, Brittany, and has since expanded worldwide, with its motherhouse now at Saint-Pern, France. Members, known by the abbreviations LSP in the United States or PSDP internationally, take vows of chastity, poverty, obedience and hospitality. As of 2014 the institute maintained 234 houses and about 2,372 sisters serving more than 13,000 elderly people across 31 countries on five continents.
