The thirteenth mansion lies in Pegasus. Associated with construction, dwellings and the provisioning of an army or household, it is generally favourable for building and settling. The earliest complete list of all twenty-eight names to survive is painted on the lid of a lacquer chest from the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng in Hubei, a burial dated to about 433 BCE. The names ring a central graph of the Dipper flanked by a dragon and a tiger, which shows the four-palace scheme was already in place by that date.

The Lunar Mansion Shi (Encampment)
Shi (Encampment) is the thirteenth of the twenty-eight xiu, the lunar mansions of traditional Chinese astronomy. Each xiu is a segment of the sky marked by a group of stars near the celestial equator, and together they divide the heavens into the belt through which the sun, moon and planets appear to move.
Palace, animal and place in the sky
This mansion belongs to the Black Tortoise of the North, the quadrant of the sky lying toward the north, one of the four symbolic creatures among which the twenty-eight are shared out seven to each. In the later scheme that pairs every mansion with a creature, Shi is assigned the Pig.
The twenty-eight mansions are among the oldest elements of Chinese sky-lore, attested well before the common era and used to track the nightly progress of the moon and to fix the calendar. The system is described here as that documented astronomical and calendrical tradition, from which its astrological uses later grew.
Shi, the Encampment of the Black Tortoise
Shi, the Encampment, is the thirteenth of the twenty-eight xiu and the sixth mansion of the northern palace, the Black Tortoise. Its name means an encampment or house, identified with two bright stars of the Great Square of Pegasus. In the later astrological tradition its animal totem is the Pig. As one of the twenty-eight lunar mansions it marks a portion of the Moon's path. These are the conventions of the Chinese astronomical and calendrical tradition, in which the twenty-eight xiu divide the sky into four palaces of seven mansions, the mansion the Moon occupies on a given night contributing to the almanac's reckoning of whether the day favours building, travel, ceremony, or rest.
Shi's identification with two bright stars of the Great Square of Pegasus, Markab and Alpheratz in the modern Western naming, gives this mansion the same underlying stars the Arabic tradition uses to define its own paired stations Al Fargh al Mukdim and Al Fargh al Thani a short distance apart in that system's count, so the Great Square supplies reference points independently reused by the Chinese, Arabic and, more loosely, Hellenistic fixed-star traditions for marking this same stretch of the fixed autumn sky.
