Popes and Church Leaders in Christian Art

Portraits and historical scenes depicting popes and other senior institutional leaders of the Christian church across history, from the early medieval papacy through the modern era, along with a small number of other historically significant Christian rulers. Includes portrait medallions, chronicle woodcuts and formal portraits of individual popes from Sergius I and Boniface IV through Julius II, Leo X, Clement VII, Pius V, Pius IX, Leo XIII, Pius X and John Paul II, historical scenes such as Urban II preaching the First Crusade, Innocent III absolving Raymond VI of Toulouse, and the coronation of Charlemagne by Leo III, and portraits of other Christian rulers such as the Emperor Charlemagne and King Ezana of Aksum. A pope or ruler shown chiefly as a canonized saint, such as Saint Louis IX carrying the Crown of Thorns, is filed under Saints in Christian Art instead.
