Christian Art

A carved, painted and gilt alabaster panel, England, 1440 to 1460, part of a twelve panel apostle set said to have come from Zamora, Spain, showing a haloed, beardless figure holding a chalice and a scroll inscribed with Creed text, titled by the museum St Philip. Held today by the Victoria and Albert Museum under museum number A.154-1922, given by Art Fund.

Depicted Subject
The scroll he carries belongs to the same Apostles' Creed scheme as the rest of the set, in which each of the twelve apostles was traditionally paired with one clause of the Creed; unlike Jude's and Simon's surviving panels, whose mottoes are legible and confirm the scheme directly, the museum's own record of this panel gives the scroll only as bearing Creed text without transcribing which clause, so the specific article assigned to Philip here is not established from the object itself. 1

Philip, Figures

The museum's own title reads St Philip directly, the strongest possible identification, no traditional-identification question involved. The chalice and Creed scroll sit among the varied family of emblems Philip carries across depictions alongside the loaves and Tau cross the corroborating Wikipedia record names as most standard.

Quote, Depicts: Philip
Philip is commonly associated with the symbol of the Latin cross. Other symbols assigned to Philip include: the cross with the two loaves...a basket filled with bread, a spear with the patriarchal cross, and a cross with a carpenter's square.
