Saint Augustine on Clouds Surrounded by Angels (Johann Jacob Eybelwieser, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2010.160)

Christian Art

A pen and brown ink drawing showing Augustine of Hippo, mitred as a bishop, borne among clouds and attending angels, by the Austrian artist Johann Jacob Eybelwieser, active circa 1667 to 1744. The drawing follows the standard Western devotional convention of Augustine as bishop and Doctor of the Church. Held today by the Metropolitan Museum of Art under accession 2010.160, purchased in 2010 through the C. G. Boerner Gift.

Facts
Origins
Attributed To
Johann Jacob Eybelwieser left a small surviving body of work, and drawings securely attributed to him are uncommon outside Austrian collections, which makes this sheet one of relatively few examples reaching an American museum. Little else about his life or training is well documented beyond his active dates in the later seventeenth and earlier eighteenth centuries. 1
