The Order of Aviz, also called the Military Order of Aviz, was founded in 1146 in Portugal by King Afonso I, with Goncalo Viegas as its first grand master, making it the oldest Portuguese honorific order; it received the town of Evora, captured from the Moors in 1166, and later established its motherhouse at the castle of Aviz. A Catholic military-religious order modeled on the Knights Templar, it adopted the Benedictine rule in 1162, and its knights, wearing a white mantle with a green fleur-de-lysed cross, fought Muslim forces in Portugal and North Africa. Secularised in 1789 under Pope Pius VI and Queen Maria I, it survives today as an active merit-based decoration awarded by the President of Portugal to military personnel and foreign dignitaries, one of Portugal's four ancient military orders.
