Sisoes the Great was an early Christian Desert Father, a solitary monk who pursued asceticism in the Egyptian desert, living in a cave once occupied by Anthony the Great. Born a Copt, he spent his monastic life in retreat, first studying under a teacher named Abba Or in the desert of Scetis before crossing the Nile to seek even greater solitude at Mount Colzim, the place where Anthony the Great had died. He died in 429 and is honored as a saint by both the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church, with his feast day celebrated on July 6.
