Barsanuphius, also known as Barsanuphius of Palestine, Barsanuphius of Gaza or, in Eastern Orthodoxy, Barsanuphius the Great, was a Christian hermit and writer of the sixth century who died sometime after 543. He is considered one of the Desert Fathers. Together with John the Prophet, he gave spiritual direction and advice to a wide range of people in the region through letters, of which more than 850 have been preserved and went on to influence Orthodox monasticism especially. He is venerated as a saint in both the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church.
