Congregation Shearith Israel, also called the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, is an Orthodox Jewish congregation on Manhattan's Upper West Side and America's oldest Jewish congregation, founded in 1654 by Sephardic Jews who settled in New Amsterdam. It follows the Spanish-Portuguese liturgical rite and worships in its landmark 1897 sanctuary at Central Park West and 70th Street.
