About

Dhakeshwari is the principal Hindu temple of Bangladesh, declared a national temple in 1996, and stands in the Bakshi Bazar quarter of old Dhaka. The name means goddess of Dhaka and the city is generally held to be named for her. The original image was moved to Kolkata in 1948 and a replacement is worshipped at Dhaka, a division both cities dispute. The temple is the focus of Durga Puja in the country and was damaged in the war of 1971.
