Kongobuji on Mount Koya is the head temple of Koyasan Shingon Buddhism, on the mountain complex Kukai founded in 816. It keeps daily rites and houses screen paintings and a large rock garden, and the surrounding town holds more than fifty temples that offer lodging to pilgrims.
