Scorpius is one of the 88 modern constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Its genitive form is Scorpii, its standard abbreviation is Sco, it is traditionally shown as the Scorpion. It belongs to the Zodiac family of constellations and lies in the third quadrant of the southern hemisphere. The constellation covers about 497 square degrees of sky, ranking 33rd in size among the 88. Its brightest star is Antares (α Sco) at apparent magnitude 0.96. It borders Sagittarius, Ophiuchus, Libra, Lupus, Norma, Ara and Corona Australis.
