Belhar Confession

Reformed (South African)
Origin from 1982

The Belhar Confession is a Christian statement of belief composed in Afrikaans in 1982 and adopted, after minor modification, as a confession of faith by the Dutch Reformed Mission Church in South Africa in 1986. It holds that unity is both a gift and an obligation for the church and that individual, racial and social segregation is sin, with God standing alongside the destitute, the poor and the wronged, teaching originally directed against apartheid-era racial division within South African Christianity. Its emphasis on unity broadened after 1994 to include the administrative reunification that formed the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa.
