Origin from 2009
The Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience is a manifesto issued by Eastern Orthodox, Catholic and evangelical Christian leaders affirming the sanctity of life, the traditional definition of marriage, and religious liberty. It was drafted on October 20, 2009, and released a month later on November 20, 2009, initially signed by more than 150 American religious leaders including Robert P. George, James Dobson, Al Mohler, Ravi Zacharias and Cornelius Plantinga. On marriage, the declaration objects not only to same-sex marriage but to a broader erosion of what it calls marriage culture, including divorce, greater acceptance of infidelity, and the separation of marriage from childbearing, and its supporting website recorded more than 551,000 signatures by July 2015.
