Origin from 1890
Official Declaration 1 is a statement of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints incorporated into the church's scripture, the Doctrine and Covenants, in 1908, addressing the church's controversial practice of plural marriage. It emerged from the same broader controversy over polygamy that the church had already publicly renounced in the 1890 Manifesto, and, like the church's later Official Declaration 2, it did not explicitly reject the underlying doctrine even as it prolonged the implementation of the policy change.
