Origin from 1904
The Second Manifesto was a declaration issued on April 6, 1904, by Joseph F. Smith, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, stating that the church would no longer sanction marriages that violated the law of the land and that any member entering into or performing a polygamous marriage would be excommunicated. It followed the original 1890 Manifesto issued by Wilford Woodruff, which had suspended the church's practice of plural marriage but had not stopped some members, including some apostles, from continuing to enter polygamous unions, prompting Smith's more forceful statement with an explicit penalty.
