Batara Kala is the god of death, time and destruction in traditional Javanese and Balinese mythology, said in some accounts to be the son of Batara Guru, the Javanese form of Shiva. He is described as devouring people considered unlucky, and Javanese ruwatan exorcism ceremonies, which can include a wayang shadow puppet performance, are held to protect children born under inauspicious circumstances from being taken by him.
