A pan-Celtic solar and healing god attested by roughly fifty dedicatory inscriptions across Gaul, northern Italy and Noricum, with a major sanctuary at Aquileia on the Adriatic. Under Roman rule he was consistently identified with Apollo as Apollo Belenus, and his name has long been linked, though the exact etymology is debated among Celticists, to the springtime Gaelic festival of Beltane.

Origin of the NameBelenus's name has long been linked to the springtime Gaelic festival of Beltane. 1 Celticists treat the connection between the theonym Belenus and the festival name Beltane as attractive but not proven. The two words are not a straightforward match by regular sound change, and some linguists derive Beltane from an unrelated root for bright fire instead, so the link stays a live proposal rather than a settled etymology. Attributes and IconographyBelenus is linked in surviving evidence with the horse and the wheel, votive clay horse figurines have been recovered from his shrine at Sainte-Sabine in Burgundy, and depictions under his Roman identification as Apollo Belenus give him a bow or a lyre borrowed directly from the Roman god's own attributes, alongside imagery of a solar chariot crossing the sky. 1 Function
