Pitao Cozobi

Zapotec Deities
Pitao Cozobi Maize Headdress

Pitao Cozobi is the Zapotec god of maize, whose name has been rendered as meaning god of abundant sustenance. Zapotec funerary urns depict him wearing a feathered headdress from which corn cobs sprout, their growth made possible by the lightning, clouds and rain shown as S-shaped emblems in the band beneath the feathers, an image tying his agricultural role directly to Cocijo, the Zapotec rain and lightning god already recorded on this atlas.
