Tawa, also called Taiowa, is the sun spirit and creator god at the center of most Hopi creation stories, who formed the First World out of Tokpella, endless space, along with its first inhabitants. It remains traditional for Hopi mothers to seek a blessing from the sun for their newborn children. In some tellings Tawa first created his nephew Sotuknang, already recorded in this same wave, and sent him to create the nine universes according to his plan; in the Four Worlds narrative it is Tawa who, dissatisfied with each preceding world, creates the next one in turn and sends Spider Grandmother, already recorded on this atlas, to guide the people upward through them.
