Disciples

Followers and students of a teacher, as distinct from those commissioned to go out and teach. Ananda, Mary Magdalene and Joseph of Arimathea are among those gathered here, and the fit is loose in each case. Ananda attended the Buddha for twenty-five years and by tradition recited the discourses at the first council, which is nearer transmission than study. Mary Magdalene is called apostle to the apostles in a long Western tradition. The heading follows the Gospel lists rather than the roles these figures held.

Overview
What Defines This Grouping
A comparative heading: close followers who receive and transmit a teaching without the sending role of an apostle. The relations it gathers are defined quite differently by the traditions that hold them, and the obligations of a disciple are not the same in any two of them. 2

The disciples

This group gathers disciples, followers and students of a teacher or founder who learn and transmit a tradition without necessarily holding the sending role of an apostle. The term is used across several traditions for the close circle around a master.

The browser will find the figures the atlas classes here. The entries describe each disciple's relation to their teacher and their part in carrying the teaching forward.
