Origin 1860 to 1879

Iridology claims that the iris of the eye contains a map of the rest of the body, with distinct zones corresponding to specific organs, and that markings, colors, and structures within a person's iris can reveal past, present, or developing conditions in the corresponding organ. It was developed independently in the 1860s and 1870s by the Hungarian physician Ignaz von Peczely and the Swedish practitioner Nils Liljequist, and popularized in the United States in the twentieth century chiefly by Bernard Jensen. Every controlled, blinded test of iridology's diagnostic claims, including a well known 1979 study published in JAMA, has found practitioners performing no better than chance at detecting known, medically confirmed conditions from iris photographs, and no anatomical or neurological pathway has ever been identified connecting specific iris regions to specific distant organs. It carries no direct physical risk in itself, but real risk of harm through misdiagnosis or delayed appropriate care when used as a substitute for medical evaluation.

Whether Peczely originated iridology after observing an injured owl is not established. The owl story is repeated in nearly every account of the system's origin and is presented as its founding moment, but the accounts trace to later iridological literature rather than to anything Peczely himself wrote. 1
Recorded as unknown rather than debated. Nobody defends a rival origin; the story simply has no attested source, and it has the shape of a foundation legend. A statement by Peczely, or a contemporary account, would settle it, and failing that the earliest attestation of the story would at least date the legend.

The Method and Claims of Iridology

Iridologists work from a chart that divides the iris into wedge-shaped zones arranged around the pupil like a clock face, each zone assigned to a specific organ or body system; a typical map places the digestive organs near the center, the extremities near the outer edge, and specific organs, such as the kidneys or lungs, in their own designated sectors, with slight variations between the several competing chart systems in use. An iridology reading examines the color, texture, and any spots, streaks, rings, or other markings within each zone, interpreting these as signs of inherited weakness, current inflammation, or a developing problem in the corresponding organ, well before, practitioners often claim, that problem would show up through conventional testing. The method is generally used as a screening or diagnostic tool pointing toward areas of the body that may need further attention, rather than as a treatment in itself.

Iridology's charts descend from the independent nineteenth century work of Ignaz von Peczely in Hungary and Nils Liljequist in Sweden, and reached wide American use through Bernard Jensen's twentieth century training programs and reference charts, which remain the most commonly taught system today. The central premise, that a fixed map connects each part of the iris to a specific distant organ, has no identified basis in ophthalmology or neuroanatomy: the iris's nerve supply and structure do not correspond to the chart's organ divisions, and no physiological pathway has been proposed, let alone demonstrated, by which a change in a distant organ would produce a specific, localized, readable change in iris tissue.

How Iridology Has Fared Under Testing

Iridology's central claim, that trained practitioners can detect known medical conditions by examining the iris, is unusually well suited to direct, blinded testing, since it can be checked by giving iridologists iris photographs from patients whose actual diagnoses are already independently known and confirmed, without telling the iridologists which photograph belongs to which diagnosis. The most cited such study, published in JAMA in 1979 by Simon, Worthen, and Mitas, photographed the irises of 143 patients, 95 with healthy kidneys and 48 with kidney disease severe enough to produce clearly abnormal blood chemistry, and had iridologists assess the photographs blind to the patients' actual status; the iridologists' assessments showed no significant ability to distinguish the two groups, performing at a level consistent with chance. Subsequent controlled, masked studies testing iridology against other confirmed conditions have reached the same conclusion, finding no diagnostic validity beyond chance.

Because iridology involves no needles, substances, or physical intervention, it carries essentially no direct physical risk of its own. The documented harm associated with it is indirect, arising when an iris reading leads a patient to believe they have, or do not have, a condition that has not actually been medically confirmed, potentially delaying appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Iridology continues to be offered within some naturopathic and alternative practices despite this consistent negative trial record, generally framed as a screening or wellness tool rather than a stand-alone diagnostic method.
