Disputed Statements

Claims this atlas currently marks as unsettled or as tested and found false. A debated fact is one scholars hold competing positions on; a debunked one has been checked against the record and found not to hold. Both are kept in view rather than quietly smoothed over, with the reasoning that put each one where it stands.

Early official Turkish tallies and some contemporary press accounts recorded as few as thirteen deaths; later scholarship treats this figure as an undercount produced amid the chaos of the two nights, when many casualties went unrecorded.

Later reconstructions, including Vryonis's study, converge on a toll of roughly thirty six to thirty seven dead, now the more widely accepted figure; no reliable count exists for the wounded or for the sexual violence contemporary accounts also document.

The Ahuja Committee's finding, adopted by the Nanavati Commission of Inquiry, put the confirmed toll in Delhi at 2,733, the officially documented count based on registered cases. Sikh representative bodies have disputed this figure as too low, arguing the true Delhi toll exceeded 3,000, with less rigorously documented nationwide estimates running considerably higher still.

The disagreement is over how the event should be read theologically, not over what took place; the facts of who attended, where and when are not in dispute.

The American Institutes for Research commissioned Jessica Utts and Ray Hyman, statisticians with opposite prior positions on the reality of psi, to review the same body of government-funded remote viewing research under a 1995 Central Intelligence Agency contract. Utts's report concluded the effect was statistically real and worth further study; Hyman's report, reviewing the identical experiments and statistics, concluded flaws in the underlying protocols were sufficient to explain the results without invoking psi, and each report was published with a short reply addressing the other's specific objections rather than a joint reconciliation. The method on both sides was statistical meta-analysis of the same published experimental record, so the disagreement is one of interpretation rather than of access to different evidence. Because both reports and both replies remain in print exactly as submitted, the AIR review is a documented case of two qualified reviewers reaching opposite conclusions from one shared data set, which is why it stands as a debated notable publication rather than a settled verdict either way.

Minghui.org's own confirmed count of practitioner deaths in the persecution, documented case by case, as of 20 November 2023. Minghui itself states the real toll is far higher given the extreme censorship in China surrounding these deaths, so no reliable upper bound exists to record as a maximum. The government of China disputes the persecution characterization itself, maintaining its 1999 ban targeted an illegal organization rather than a religious minority, which is why this figure is recorded as debated rather than settled.

The 2013 Meiktila Riots, Death Toll AssessmentThe attested figure of 40 dead is the Myanmar government's own official count. Human Rights Watch's contemporaneous satellite and field investigation, the same source this atlas cites for the toll itself, documents that the riots destroyed over 800 buildings across multiple wards with security forces largely failing to intervene, and states plainly that the true death toll is likely higher than the official count given bodies reportedly burned in the destruction and the limited access investigators had to some affected areas. This atlas records the official figure as its attested floor while carrying HRW's own documented concern about undercounting rather than adopting a higher, unreconciled figure.

Sri Lanka's Ministry of Health revised the initial police toll of three hundred fifty nine down to two hundred fifty three days after the attack, once autopsies cross-referenced against DNA samples showed that the extreme mutilation of bodies at the blast sites had caused separate body parts to be double counted as separate victims; this atlas treats that corrected figure, not the initial uncorrected police count, as the honest floor.

According To Puranic Hinduism

The Adityas are conventionally twelve sun-gods born of Aditi, but the two major Puranic lists differ over exactly which twelve. The Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata Purana agree on ten names and diverge on the remaining two: the Vishnu Purana includes Parjanya and Amshu, and the Bhagavata Purana includes Savitr and Vidhatri in their place. Both are anonymous Puranic compilations without a fixed single date, transmitted and expanded across centuries by different priestly lineages rather than by a single author, which is why no investigator can adjudicate between them the way a manuscript stemma might settle a copying error. The method, following Arthur Anthony Macdonell's Vedic Mythology (1897), is textual comparison of the two received lists against each other, and since Sanskrit tradition itself preserves both without flagging either as the correction of the other, the atlas records which text names which figure rather than treating either list as the settled membership.

The Aesir, Point in DisputeWhether the Aesir-Vanir division and the war between them reflect an actual prehistoric development, such as one cult absorbing another, or are a later literary and theological schema imposed on an originally undifferentiated pantheon, is unsettled. Georges Dumezil read the war as evidence for his trifunctional hypothesis of Indo-European society, a reading not universally accepted by Norse specialists.

Steven Pinker cites 200,000 as the lower figure for the crusade's dead. Matthew White's compilation, which Pinker cites approvingly in the same discussion, puts the figure at one million; that upper estimate is recorded separately as death-toll-max. Languedoc's estimated thirteenth-century population was itself only around one million, which is the basis on which some scholars treat the higher figure as implausible on its face.

Currently States The ancestry of the second eucharistic prayer of the 1969 Roman Missal is disputed

Many twentieth-century eucharistic prayers were modelled on a prayer preserved in a church order long attributed to Hippolytus of Rome and dated to the early third century, adopted partly on the strength of its claim to be the oldest complete eucharistic prayer known to survive. Paul Bradshaw, Maxwell Johnson and L. Edward Phillips's The Apostolic Tradition: A Commentary (2002) argued from close textual and manuscript analysis that the document is in fact a composite, assembled from material of different dates and places rather than a single early third-century Roman work, with no secure link to Hippolytus personally or to Rome, a reading now widely held among liturgical scholars. Other scholars continue to defend an early Roman core beneath the later composite layers. The method is text-critical and comparative, reading the surviving Latin, Ethiopic, Sahidic and other versions of the document against each other and against other early liturgical witnesses. Because the major twentieth-century liturgical revisions built on this text were undertaken before this reassessment, the liturgical decision itself was taken on the older, now largely superseded view.

According To Christianity

The Apocrypha is the name Protestant tradition gives to a set of Jewish books that stand in the Septuagint and the Vulgate but not in the Hebrew Bible; the word itself means hidden, and using it as the books' label is already a position in the argument rather than a neutral description, since Catholic and Orthodox churches receive most of the same books as deuterocanonical scripture, canonical rather than merely apocryphal, while Jewish tradition does not treat them as scripture at all. The Canon Debate (Lee Martin McDonald and James A. Sanders, eds., 2002) collects scholarship on exactly how and when the different canons closed differently around this same body of books, which is why the classification recorded here, apocryphal, is one communion's answer rather than a fact independent of which tradition is asking.
