Currently States No hidden-target perception test of a spontaneous or induced out-of-body experience has produced results independent researchers accept as demonstrating genuine veridical perception from outside the body; laboratory induction of the sensation itself is well replicated as a neurological state.
Olaf Blanke and colleagues triggered an out-of-body sensation through direct electrical stimulation of the temporoparietal junction in a patient undergoing pre-surgical brain mapping, published in a 2002 Nature paper, and later extended the finding using mirror and virtual-reality illusions that manipulate where a healthy subject's brain locates their own body in space. The method is neurological, first clinical electrical stimulation and then controlled perceptual illusion, directly producing the subjective sensation under laboratory conditions rather than waiting for a spontaneous report. This work shows the subjective sensation itself is well documented and reproducible neurologically, arising from an identifiable disruption of the brain's own body-location processing. What it does not support is the further claim some experiencers make, that consciousness genuinely travels outside the physical body during the experience, since no controlled test has demonstrated a subject in this state acquiring information they could not have obtained through ordinary senses. The replication status is recorded as debunked for the genuine-travel claim specifically, while the neurological sensation it is built on is not in question.
