Silsila (The Chain of Spiritual Descent)

Orthodoxy and Dissent

Every tariqa is defined by its chain. Authority in an order is not an office and not a qualification: it is transmission, conferred by a master on a disciple and traceable link by link to its origin. Most chains run back through Ali ibn Abi Talib. The Naqshbandi chain is the notable exception, running through Abu Bakr, which is one of the marks of that order's strongly Sunni character. Some orders claim a further route: instruction received directly from the Prophet or from a master no longer living, called Uwaysi transmission, which Ahmad al-Tijani claimed as the ground of his order's independence from every older line. A written licence, the ijaza or khilafat-nama, is what makes a successor rather than merely a follower. Salafi and Wahhabi scholarship rejects the whole structure, holding that religious authority rests on evidence and transmitted knowledge and not on initiation.

The License That Makes a Claimed Chain Verifiable

A silsila is only as real as its documentation, and the instrument that makes a claimed chain verifiable is the ijaza, a written license a master issues to a disciple certifying that the transmission has been completed and naming the disciple as an authorized link in turn. Without one, a claim of initiation is a disciple's own assertion; with one, it is a credential other members of the order, and rival orders, can inspect, which is why historians of Sufism treat surviving ijazas as some of the clearest documentary evidence for how a given tariqa actually spread rather than how it later claimed to have spread.

The Naqshbandi order's chain through Abu Bakr rather than Ali is not a minor variant detail. Every other major tariqa traces its transmission through Ali ibn Abi Talib, even though the orders themselves are Sunni. Routing the chain instead through Abu Bakr, the first caliph and a figure whose primacy is a specifically Sunni claim, gave the Naqshbandiyya a genealogy that matched its doctrinal conservatism from its own founding narrative outward, rather than inheriting a structure built on a different line's account of legitimate succession.

A claim of Uwaysi transmission is harder to verify for exactly this reason: it reports instruction received without a living teacher and without any ijaza a rival order could ever inspect, which is precisely why Ahmad al-Tijani's use of it to found an independent line proved as controversial among other Sufi orders as it was foundational for his own.

Bektashi Order

The Bektashi chain runs from Haji Bektash Veli, and the order's later organisation into initiated grades sits alongside that chain rather than replacing it.

Chishti Order

The Chishti chain runs from Muin al-Din Chishti of Ajmer back through Khurasan to the Prophet, and initiation into that chain, rather than any office, is what confers authority in the order.

Islam

Mevlevi Order

The Mevlevi chain runs from Jalal al-Din Rumi through his son Sultan Walad, and leadership stayed in Rumi's descendants, which makes the order unusual in joining spiritual descent to actual descent.

Muridiyya

Ahmadu Bamba was initiated in the Qadiri chain, and the Muridiyya descends from it while functioning as an independent order centred on Touba in Senegal.

Naqshbandi Order

The Naqshbandi chain is unusual in running back to the Prophet through Abu Bakr rather than through Ali, which is one of the marks of the order's strongly Sunni character.

Qadiriyya Order

The Qadiri chain runs from Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani of Baghdad, and because the order spread very widely without a central organisation many local chains claim him at different removes.

Rifa'i Order

The Rifai chain runs from Ahmad al-Rifai of the Iraqi marshes, and the order is among the oldest of the tariqas, established before the Qadiriyya spread.

Tijaniyyah

Ahmad al-Tijani taught that he received his litany directly from the Prophet in a waking vision rather than through a chain of living masters, so the order presents itself as beginning with him rather than continuing an older line.

Critiqued By

Salafism

Salafi scholarship rejects the Sufi chain of initiation as a ground of religious authority, holding that authority rests on evidence and transmitted knowledge rather than on initiation.

Opposed By

Wahhabism

Wahhabi doctrine rejects the Sufi chain of initiation as a ground of religious authority, and the destruction of shrines that followed the movement's expansion was the practical form of that refusal.
