Layene

The Layene, also spelled Layene, Layenne or Layeen, is a religious brotherhood of Sufi Muslims based in Senegal, founded in 1884 by Seydina Limamou Laye, who lived from 1844 to 1909. It is notable for its belief that its founder was the Mahdi, and that his son, Seydina Issa Rouhou Laye, was the reincarnation of Jesus. The order is centered in the Dakar-area communities of Yoff and Camberene, is led by a Khalif Generale, and counts an estimated 70,000 to 100,000 followers, making it the smallest of Senegal's four dominant Sufi brotherhoods alongside the Qadiriyya, Tijaniyyah and Muridiyya, and popular in particular among the ethnic Lebou.
