Origin 1888

Root Races and Rounds is the scheme of human and planetary evolution Helena Blavatsky set out in The Secret Doctrine (1888), presented as a commentary on the Stanzas of Dzyan. Humanity is said to evolve through seven Root Races, each dividing into seven sub-races, while the whole of planetary life cycles through seven Rounds, spans of time vastly longer than any conventional evolutionary timescale. The scheme places the present, fifth Root Race after the mythical First and Second Root Races and after the sunken continents of Lemuria and Atlantis, home to the Third and Fourth, with two Root Races and further Rounds still to come.

Theosophy, following Blavatsky's The Secret Doctrine. It remains foundational to the tradition's own account of human and cosmic origins. 1
Historical Origin
Published in 1888 in The Secret Doctrine, Blavatsky's central work, presented as her commentary on an ancient text, the Stanzas of Dzyan, that no independent scholar has ever examined and that is generally regarded by historians as her own composition. 1
Status
Status Within the Tradition
Standard teaching, not formally defined 1
Standing as a Comparative Category
A modern system making claims scholarship never entertained; it never held scholarly standing 2
Controversy
Point in Dispute
The scheme's vocabulary of hierarchically ranked root races was later selectively taken up by Ariosophist and other early twentieth century racial nationalist writers for ends Blavatsky's own stated commitment to the fundamental unity of humankind did not endorse. Historians of esotericism treat the influence and the misuse as largely separable strands of the same text's legacy. 2
Structure
Structure
Seven Root Races, each subdividing into seven sub-races, unfolding across seven planetary Rounds, with the present humanity identified as the fifth Root Race, sometimes called the Aryan race in Blavatsky's own nineteenth century vocabulary. 3
Scholarship and Forensics
Scholarly Note
Historians of Western esotericism, including Wouter Hanegraaff, treat The Secret Doctrine as a central document in the modern reinvention of esoteric thought and read its cosmology as myth-making with lasting cultural influence, not as a claim to verifiable anthropology or human prehistory. 2

The Ages of Man, Doctrines

Both divide human history into a numbered sequence of successive races or ages, an instance of the wider pattern of successive world-ages that comparative studies of religion, including Eliade's, describe as a recurring archaic form.
