The Spanish Philippines, administered from 1565 to 1898 under the Real Patronato de Indias, was a colonial administration in which the Catholic Church was directly woven into governance: the friar orders (Augustinians, Franciscans, Dominicans and Jesuits) administered towns as parish priests with substantial civil authority, oversaw conversion of the overwhelming majority of the lowland population to Catholicism, and became so politically dominant that friar power was a central grievance of the later Philippine Revolution.
