Amos

Prophets

Amos is one of the twelve Minor Prophets of the Hebrew Bible, whose speeches are reported in the Book of Amos, and New World Encyclopedia describes him as the first of the literary prophets, whose words were recorded for posterity. The same article places his prophesying in the days of Jeroboam II of Israel, while Uzziah was king of Judah. The style and content of his prophecies had a lasting influence on later Jewish prophets as well as on Christian ministry, and in the modern era he has become particularly influential as the prophet of social justice, denouncing mere religion and religious hypocrisy and calling for justice to roll on like a river. He is entered here so the haftarah readings drawn from the Book of Amos can be attributed to their traditional author.
