Fon myth, recorded by Herskovits, makes Legba the youngest child of Mawu-Lisa, the one given no fixed province of his own, only the gift of every language and the right to stand at every threshold. When the other vodun divided the world's domains among themselves and left Legba nothing, he asked instead to attend each of them, learning their business and carrying their words to Mawu and back; because every message must pass through him, no vodun can be reached except through Legba first, and none, including his own mother, escapes his knowledge of what they have done. He is credited with playing several of his elder siblings and even the creator against one another out of mischief, a habit that cemented rather than cost him his place as the one who must be greeted first at any rite.

Legba's Crossing: From Fon Messenger to Papa Legba of the Crossroads
The same trade that carried Dan across the Atlantic as Damballa carried Legba as well, and the youngest child of Mawu-Lisa reappears in Haiti as Papa Legba, guardian of the crossroads in Haitian Vodou. Scholarship on Haitian religion, notably Leslie Desmangles's study of Vodou's fusion with Roman Catholicism, treats Legba's continuity from Fon Vodun to the Haitian lwa as one of the clearest and best documented cases of a specific West African deity surviving the crossing with his function intact: the Fon Legba who must be addressed before any other vodun can be reached becomes, in Haiti, the lwa who must be greeted first in every ceremony, since no other spirit can be reached without his permission. Haitian tradition also gave him a new visual language, an old man leaning on a cane and smoking a pipe rather than the youngest child of the Fon telling, syncretized in some Vodou practice with Catholic imagery of a gatekeeper saint. What survived the crossing unaltered is the structural role rather than the iconography: the figure through whom every other spirit must be reached, standing at the threshold between the human world and the divine, occupies the same office in Ouidah and in Port-au-Prince alike, even where the details worshippers hang on it differ.
Legba's Worship: The Spirit Served First, Every Time
Of all the vodun and lwa descended from the Fon pantheon, Legba's worship is among the most continuous and the most structurally central, because Vodun and Vodou ceremony cannot proceed without him. Fieldwork on Vodun as practiced on the Benin coast today records Legba's shrine standing at the entrance of the family compound rather than within it, greeted with an offering before any other vodun is approached, a sequence scholarship on the tradition describes as fixed rather than optional. Benin recognized Vodun as an official religion in 1996 and instituted January 10 as a national public holiday, Fete du Vodoun, observed with public ceremony that includes the invocation of gatekeeper spirits like Legba before the day's wider observance proceeds. The same first-served sequence carries into Haitian Vodou, where Papa Legba opens every ceremony before any other lwa is served, a continuity scholarship on Haiti's own Vodou practice confirms independently of the West African record. This record states that public, structural fact of worship order and national recognition; it does not describe the interior conduct of any convent initiation or ceremony, which West African Vodun keeps closed to outsiders and which this record accordingly leaves undescribed.
