Zaynab bint Ali

Zaynab bint Ali was a daughter of Ali and Fatimah and a granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad, sister of Hasan and Husayn. She was present at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE, where her brother Husayn and most of the men of their family were killed by the forces of the Umayyad caliph Yazid, and was taken captive afterward along with the surviving women and children, first to Kufa and then to Damascus. In both cities she is recorded as having spoken publicly against the killings, confronting the governor Ibn Ziyad and the caliph Yazid himself in their own courts. Her sermons, preserved and expanded in later Shia tradition, are widely credited with turning Karbala from a defeat into a story that could be told, mourned and retold, and her role in carrying that memory forward is central to Shia devotional life, especially the annual mourning of Muharram and Ashura. A major shrine in Damascus, Sayyidah Zaynab, is attributed to her and remains a significant site of pilgrimage.
