The fixed star Tarazed lies at Aquarius 0 degrees 56 minutes in the constellation Aquila, the eagle. It is Gamma Aquilae, a bright orange giant just north of Altair, its name coming from a Persian phrase for the beam of the balance. No single traditional Ptolemaic planetary nature is recorded for it here. The fixed stars hold their places and lend their character to any planet that meets them.

Tarazed is Gamma Aquilae, apparent magnitude about 2.7, at roughly 460 light years. It is an orange bright giant, spectral type K3, a star that has left the main sequence and swollen to many times the Sun's diameter; it is far more luminous than its modest brightness suggests, its distance doing the discounting. It lies just north of Altair, and the two, with the fainter Alshain to the south, form the short line that makes the eagle's head recognisable. The name comes from a Persian phrase for the beam of a steelyard balance, the three stars read together as the balance and its weights.

Persian balance imagery of this kind, a beam and its weights read into a short line of stars, is one of the older non-Arabic, non-Greek naming layers preserved in the fixed-star catalogues; Persian astronomy and astrology had its own independent tradition of court astrologers well before the Islamic conquest, and fragments of that older Persian nomenclature survive scattered through names that later compilers filed simply as "Arabic" without distinguishing the two Middle Eastern traditions. Tarazed's greater distance than Altair despite its similar apparent brightness is a clean small illustration of the general principle that apparent magnitude alone never tells an observer how intrinsically luminous a star actually is.

Read with Altair, Under Aquila

Tarazed carries no strong independent delineation in the tradition; it is read as part of the constellation Aquila, taking the Mars-and-Jupiter nature Ptolemy assigns the eagle's bright stars and lending its own weight to the eagle's themes of command and bold enterprise. This is the ordinary situation for the secondary stars of a constellation: the compiling tradition, Robson included, attaches a detailed personality reading only to the brightest one or two and treats the rest by association. Its genuine interest is astronomical, an evolved giant caught in a brief, bright and unstable phase of its life.

Tarazed's status as a bright giant rather than a main-sequence star like its neighbour Altair means the two, though close together in the sky and both prominent, are at entirely different points in stellar evolution, a genuine astronomical distinction the shared Mars-and-Jupiter delineation, inherited wholesale from the constellation's brightest star, does nothing to register. No specific delineation beyond the shared Mars-and-Jupiter nature of Aquila's bright stars is recorded for Tarazed individually in Robson or the sources he draws on, which is the ordinary condition for a constellation's second-brightest star.
