Rose quartz behaves unlike other quartz varieties in two ways that turn out to be connected, and the explanation was only worked out in the last few decades.
The first oddity is habit. Amethyst, citrine and smoky quartz all form good terminated crystals. Rose quartz almost never does. It occurs as massive, cloudy, vein-filling material in pegmatites, and euhedral rose-coloured crystals are rare enough to be a distinct collecting speciality, and those, confusingly, are coloured by a different mechanism.
The second is the cloudiness. Rose quartz is never water-clear; it is always slightly turbid, and it often shows a faint asterism, a six-rayed star, when a sphere of it is held to a point source.
Both follow from the cause of the colour. Work published in the early 2000s attributed the pink of massive rose quartz to vast numbers of microscopic fibrous inclusions of a mineral related to dumortierite, oriented within the quartz. The fibres are far too fine to see individually, they scatter light, which produces the haze and the asterism, and they are why the material grows as an interlocking mass rather than as clear crystals. The colour is therefore an inclusion effect rather than a trace element sitting in the quartz lattice.
Rose quartz is very widely sold and has an extensive modern reputation. Its documented pre-modern record is thin: beads are known from the ancient Near East, and Roman use is attested, but there is no substantial classical or medieval body of attribution behind the meanings now attached to it.
