Mercury is the messenger of the gods and the principle of mind, language, and exchange. In myth he is Hermes, swift guide of souls and patron of travelers, merchants, translators, and thieves, the only god who moves freely between Olympus and the underworld; the Romans knew him as Mercury, the god of commerce. Never more than a sign or two from the Sun, he signifies thought, speech, logic, learning, and every kind of transaction and connection. He rules two signs, airy Gemini and earthy Virgo, and is exalted in Virgo, in detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces, and in fall in Pisces, sharp where precision and analysis serve and scattered where the big picture or the dream dissolves detail. Psychologically he is the rational function, curiosity, and the way we process and relay information. In the body he rules the nervous system, the hands, and the lungs and breath; he governs Wednesday; his metal is quicksilver, fluid and quick; and his colors are mixed, iridescent, and yellow.

Mercury as a Classical Planet

Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, is exalted in Virgo, and is in detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces and in fall in Pisces. It is the only classical planet the tradition calls common or convertible: Ptolemy describes it as taking on the nature of whatever it is joined to, dry with the dry and moist with the moist, diurnal when it rises before the Sun as a morning star and nocturnal when it sets after it as an evening star. Because it never appears more than about twenty-eight degrees from the Sun, it is always in the same sign as the Sun or in one of the neighbouring signs, which sharply constrains the aspects it can make. Its natural significations are speech, writing, calculation, trade, messengers, short journeys, the hands and the nervous system, and it is the planet of what passes between things rather than of any thing in itself.

The Latin name Mercury renders the Greek Hermes, who in turn renders the Babylonian planet-god Nabu, patron of writing and the scribal arts, a chain of translation that carried the planet's association with language and communication across three languages and well over a thousand years before it ever reached a Roman text. Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, compiled in the Hellenistic synthesis of roughly the first century BCE to the second century CE, explains Mercury's changeable elemental quality on physical grounds, drying and moisture-absorbing by turns, and humidifying, because it stands next above the sphere of the Moon, the same reasoning by proximity the text applies throughout. The underlying tracking of Mercury as a celestial omen, distinct from the horoscopic use later built on it, reaches back to Babylonian celestial omen-reading of perhaps 1000 BCE.

Retrogradation, and the God of the Crossing

Mercury turns retrograde, apparently moving backwards against the stars, three or four times a year for about three weeks at a time, an effect of the Earth overtaking the faster inner planet on the inside of its orbit. The classical tradition treated retrogradation as a weakening or confusing of a planet's action; the modern popular doctrine that Mercury retrograde specifically disrupts travel, contracts and electronics is a twentieth-century elaboration and should be dated as such. The god behind the planet is the Greek Hermes and the Roman Mercury, messenger, guide of souls to the underworld, patron of merchants and of thieves, the divinity of boundaries and of what crosses them; the Mesopotamian planet was assigned to Nabu, god of scribes. The identification of the planet with Thoth and with Hermes Trismegistus is what gives the whole Hermetic literature its name.

The three or four retrogrades a year follow from a single figure. Mercury's synodic period, the interval between successive conjunctions with the Sun as seen from Earth, is about 116 days, so the cycle repeats a little over three times in a year and the retrograde arc falls at the middle of each. The same geometry produces a second and older doctrine. Mercury never appears more than about 28 degrees from the Sun and often much less, so it is never more than a sign away from it and spends a large part of every year within the classical distance for combustion, which the tradition read as a debility in its own right. A Mercury free of the Sun's beams is the exception, not the rule.

Glyph and Origin

Its glyph is a circle topped by a crescent and set above a small cross, often read as the winged cap or caduceus of the god. Mercury is one of the seven classical planets of Mesopotamian and Hellenistic astrology. In the parallel language of alchemy the same sign denoted quicksilver, the liquid metal that shares the planet's Latin name and its associations of swiftness and changeability, and the Romance-language weekday descended from the planet, mercredi in French, is among the clearest surviving traces of the old planetary week in ordinary speech (English Wednesday instead preserves the Germanic god Woden, substituted for Mercury by early translators who judged the two figures comparable).

Alongside the rest of the classical seven, Mercury's sign was encoded in the Miscellaneous Symbols block when Unicode fixed the standard astrological and astronomical glyphs in its 1991 release, giving a symbol assembled piecemeal across more than a thousand years of manuscript copying a single, stable digital identity. Because Mercury shares its rulership between Gemini and Virgo, its glyph is also one of the more frequently printed of the seven in any traditional almanac or ephemeris, appearing wherever the fast-moving planet's shifting position through the signs needs to be tracked in detail.

Thoth reaches Mercury through the Greeks, who identified him with Hermes and produced Hermes Trismegistus from the merger. In Egyptian astronomy Thoth was a lunar god, and the planet Mercury was called Sebegu and linked to Set.

Xolotl, Deities

The assignment is questionable. Xolotl is Quetzalcoatl's canine twin and, in Mesoamerican astronomy, the evening star, which makes him a Venus figure rather than a Mercury one. Mesoamerican records show little interest in Mercury.

Zhuanxu, Deities

Chinese astronomy calls Mercury the Water Star, Shuixing, and Zhuanxu is the Black Emperor of the north and of water among the Five Emperors. The link runs through the five phases rather than through any direct planetary myth.
