Alchemical books and treatises, among them illuminated manuscripts, emblem books and short revered texts that describe the great work through allegory, image and recipe. They were copied, printed and studied across the Islamic and Latin worlds. They were valued for their images as much as for their words, and generations of readers have interpreted their pictures as spiritual allegory as well as chemical instruction. Members placed here so far include The Emerald Tablet, Aurora Consurgens, Mutus Liber (The Silent Book), Splendor Solis, Rosarium Philosophorum.
