Fertility and Spring Rites

Rites performed to promote the fertility of land, animals or people: the Maypole Dance of northern Europe and the wider class of fertility rites known from agricultural societies. A ritual belongs here when its cited article describes a rite whose stated aim is fertility or the returning growth of spring. It excludes rites of marriage and birth, which sit in the life cycle subcategory. Examples in the atlas include The Maypole Dance.
